Conversation with Retired Woman Principal

In today’s digital era, social media plays a significant role in shaping young minds. To discuss its influence, benefits, and challenges, the Present Headmistress of Parle Tilak Vidyalaya English Medium School (Primary Section), Mrs. Kalpana Kalekar interviewed former Headmistress Mrs. Amita Bhide.

In the discussion on the impact of social media, madam Amita Bhide highlighted its deep influence on young minds. She observed that even very young children are adept at using digital devices, with social media shaping their behaviour, language, and exposure to the world.

Acknowledging its benefits, she emphasised that social media is essential in today’s interconnected world, providing vast information and enhancing learning through visual and interactive tools that improve vocabulary, mathematical, and logical skills.

However, she expressed concerns about its adverse effects, particularly the diminishing attention span of children accustomed to short-form content. She stressed the importance of adult supervision in regulating content to ensure safety.

Mrs. Bhide advocated for schools and teachers to educate parents on responsible internet use, limiting access to academic purposes. She advised parents to set clear rules, enable parental controls, and encourage children to engage in sports, hobbies, and real-world activities to maintain a healthy balance between online and offline life.
