Stress Buster story
As the school counselor, I welcomed a mother – son duo into my cabin. Both appeared stressed, the weight of school assignments and daily responsibilities clearly taking a toll. Mother shared that her son was struggling with the pressure of his studies, while she herself felt overwhelmed managing work and household tasks.
I suggested a series of stress-busting techniques they could try at home. First, we began with deep breathing exercises, where they inhaled deeply for a count of four, held for four, and exhaled for four. After a few rounds, both of them seemed more grounded.
Next, I introduced them to the concept of gratitude journaling. I asked them to each write down three things they were grateful for, no matter how small. Son wrote about his supportive friends, while the mother focused on moments of peace she found throughout her day.
We also discussed the importance of taking mindful breaks. I encouraged them to set aside 15 minutes each day to do something relaxing together, like reading, listening to calming music, or even practising a few simple stretches at home.
Before they left, we talked about making time for one-on-one conversations where they could express their feelings openly or write journals and then share thoughts and reflection. The goal was to create space for connection and release, helping them navigate stress together.
